THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay Community Foundation awarded a record high amount of $118,800 in scholarships and bursaries to 31 youth from Thunder Bay and the District of Thunder Bay including Geraldton, Marathon, Nipigon-Red Rock and Manitouwadge.

The reception was filled with love, pride and joy for the many wonderful recipients from their loved ones; donors and friends of the Foundation; and the board, alumni and staff of the Thunder Bay Community Foundation.

“We are overwhelmed with gratitude that our donors have been so generous and have allowed us to give out 17 awards to 31 youth”, said executive director Bonnie Moore.

The Foundation received a record-breaking 138 applications, which is double the amount from 2017 and more than any year in Foundation history.

"This year was my first year chairing the Scholarship and Bursary Marking committee. It was such a rewarding experience, albeit, a challenging experience. Most people would state they were amazed with all the strong applicants and the efforts they put into their high school career – however, I wasn’t," said Mike Larizza, chair of the scholarship and bursary committee.

"Thunder Bay as a community shouldn’t amaze us anymore.  With our athletes, to our entrepreneurs, to our doctors, nurses, lawyers, tradespeople and yes Leaders – Thunder Bay as a community is like no other – and a place with such strong leadership."

Applications are available March 1 of every year. Go to www.tbcf.org for more information.
