THUNDER BAY -- The Thunder Bay District Health Unit is reporting its highest number of new, confirmed COVID-19 cases in more than three weeks.

The health unit on Thursday announced 15 new cases, the most since an equal number of cases were announced on April 7.

With nine previous cases now considered resolved, there are now 67 active cases in the district, the most since last Saturday, when there were also 15 cases.

Additionally, the health unit says a 26th COVID-19 case considered a variant of concern has also been detected. Half of those cases have been discovered this week.

All 15 new cases are considered to reside in Thunder Bay and surrounding area and 14 of them are from close contact exposure.

Thunder Bay also passed another dubious COVID-19 milestone, surpassing the 2,500 case mark for 2021, with 2,511 recorded this year. There have been 3,096 cases since the pandemic began, with 2,967 resolved and 62 deaths.
