THUNDER BAY — The Thunder Bay Police Service is reminding drivers to ensure their license plates are clearly visible.

Under the Highway Traffic Act, all vehicles must display two plates that are plainly visible. Failing to display both plates carries a fine of $85, while having plates that are obscured, dirty, faded, or blocked by equipment such as a spare tire or bumper bar can result in a fine of up to $110.

Thunder Bay policle use Automated Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) technology to help officers identify vehicles involved in investigations or whose owners face driving prohibitions or licence suspensions. Obstructed or improperly displayed plates interfere with this technology and make it harder for officers to visually identify vehicles of interest.

Drivers should also note that displaying an incorrect licence plate is another offence under the Highway Traffic Act, which can result in fines.
