THUNDER BAY -- The holidays may be over, but the spirit of giving continues at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

For more than 20 years, staff at the hospital have been making donations from their payroll to support the purchase of new diagnostic equipment.

A luncheon was held on Tuesday to thank the employees for contributing, and to announce the total raised last year was $84,000.

A further $10,000 was donated through a partnership with Tbaytel.

Members of the Employee Giving Program Committee said critical equipment like vital signs monitors and IV monitors don't receive funding from the province.

Employee giving program member Kasey Etreni said one of the speakers Tuesday mentioned that normally they have to share multiple monitors through the department.

“This enables them to actually be able to have that piece of equipment readily available instead of trying to share the equipment with other departments,” Etreni said.

Funding also went towards the purchase of 120 patient room clocks, a refrigerator for families in the OR, and renovations for a patient kitchen in the renal department.
