More than two years after their last collective agreement expired, Thunder Bay's separate school board and the union representing elementary school teachers are returning to the bargaining table.
Negotiators for the two sides have set aside two days for talks early next week.
The last set of negotiations took place about two months ago.
Spokespersons for both parties say the seniority clause is a key issue holding up a deal. The Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association wants seniority to be a major criterion for filling any posted positions.
In a statement, Director of Education Pino Tassone said "We continue to remain optimistic throughout these negotiations." He also thanked the school board trustees and school principals "for their endless support during this time."
OECTA Thunder Bay unit president Aldo Grillo said "we've always been eager to get back to the table so everyone can get on with their jobs."
Grillo pointed out the contract the two sides are trying to finalize now will be set to expire in only nine months, setting the stage for negotiations on the next collective agreement.
