THUNDER BAY – The province’s plan to have a network of nearly 500 electric vehicle charging stations up and running by the end of this month has hit a speed bump.
Two of those units were supposed to be in Thunder Bay, but the installation work hasn't even begun yet.
The province is spending $20 million to increase the network of charging stations.
Only two-thirds of the new units will be operational by Friday, and the rest won't be in place until fall.
Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca said technical issues and permit processes are at least part of the reason for the delay, as the province works with two dozen private- and public-sector partners to install the chargers.
The two Thunder Bay stations were supposed to be set up at a McDonalds restaurant on Memorial Avenue and the Tim Hortons on East Avenue.
Toronto-based Koben Systems won the contract for this region, but company officials refused to comment on when the charging stations will be installed.
