Some local students are taking a bite out of the future with new computers and tablets.

The Matawa Learning Centre kicked off an electronic approach to education with 30 iPads Tuesday morning.

The tablets will be incorporated into every subject for the centre’s 26 high school students in order to get them ready for job opportunities that will come to their communities with the development of the ring of fire.

“It’s a way to prepare our students for the jobs that are going to be coming the technology that they’re going to be expected to use as well as meet their learning needs and just about growth opportunities beyond high school,” Principal Brad Battison said.

Along with applications for traditional high school subjects, the tablets have applications for mining activities like mapping. The students have been waiting to get their hands on the tablets for weeks Battison said.

“They wanted to start right away as soon as they heard.”

The centre also purchased laptops. Battison is hoping that the technology will soon be used in Matawa communities as well.

“The stronger the students are in terms of their education and knowledge of these resources when the future comes and technology keeps expanding and growing they’re going to be able to grow and adapt with it,” Battison said.
