THUNDER BAY -- Two teen girls are facing charges after allegedly breaking into an elementary school and stealing nearly a dozen tablets.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers, who were involved in conducting an Eco Superior community event on Wednesday evening at the Mary J L Black library, were approached by witnesses reporting a break-in and theft at the nearby St. Martin's School.

The witnesses told officers they heard three youths boasting about breaking into the school and stealing iPads. The youths subsequently fled the area.

Officers found the two teen girls in a back lane on Heath Street. The girls were not in possession of iPads, but they were found to have several charging cords. Investigators subsequently searched the area and found 11 iPads covered in leaves in the yard of a nearby home.

The two girls who were arrested are scheduled to appear in court on Thursday. The third suspect has been identified by investigators.

The names of the suspects can't be published under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
