THUNDER BAY – A pair of youth have been charged with assaulting a police officer after refusing to leave a high school dance.

In a release issued on Friday morning, police say they arrived at Sir Winston Churchill Collegiate and Vocational Institute at about 9:15 p.m. on Thursday night at the request of school officials who wanted the 17-year-olds removed.

One male began to leave, but the second refused and was advised he’d be arrested for trespassing if he did not vacate the premises.

The youth then allegedly shoved and punched the officer and the situation escalated, both youth becoming involved.

The two teens were arrested and taken into custody.

They appeared in court on Friday morning to answer to the charges. One faced two counts of assault and resisting arrest, while the other was charged with assaulting a police officer and obstructing police.

The students, who were released from custody, cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
