The cost of obtaining criminal record checks will go up by 50 per cent.

THUNDER BAY -- Thunder Bay's police services board has voted to increase the cost of obtaining criminal record checks, by up to 50 per cent.

The increase is due to an effort to improve customer service, with regards to the information many employers or volunteer organizations require.

Volunteer Criminal record checks are increasing from $16.50 to $25, and All-purpose checks will rise from $40 to $55.

Fingerprinting, which was a free option in the past, is now going to cost $55 for employment purposes, and $30 for Volunteer.

Staff Seargent Derek West said the increases are in place to cover the cost of running the checks.

“It’s an encore function of policing, and because it’s an encore function of policing we have to go through a business case to ensure the staff, and the equipment used to do those checks are calculated into a cost neutral basis,” West said,

“That ensures that it’s reflective of what it costs to do those because it’s an encore function of policing.”

One additional feature that is being added, is the ability to complete a Criminal record check from the comfort of your home, as the checks can soon be done online.
