The first half of September may be drier and warmer than normal

Hot weather to start the month comes on the heels of a warmer than normal August

THUNDER BAY — With a predicted maximum temperature of 25 degrees Celsius, the last day of August in Thunder Bay symbolizes the kind of weather city residents enjoyed the entire month.

Data released by Environment Canada shows that the average daily high at Thunder Bay Airport through August was 24.9 C.

That is almost two degrees higher than the long-term average for the month.

Similarly, the overall mean temperature for August at Thunder Bay Airport was 18.6 degrees, compared with the long-term average of only 16.6.

"So by pretty much any metric, the Thunder Bay area was warmer than normal for the month of August," says Environment Canada meteorologist Jeff Coulson.

However, Coulson noted on Wednesday that some residents along the north shore of Lake Superior may have had a different experience, as there was a fair amount of fog and much cooler weather due to wind coming off the lake this month.

In the city, August continued the pattern of below-normal precipitation that was established in June and July.

Coulson said approximately 47 mm of rain was recorded at the airport, barely half the long-term average of 87 millimetres.

September will begin with temperatures well above normal.

On both Thursday and Friday, the thermometer is expected to reach 29 C, compared with a normal high of about 20.

Coulson said current indicators point to a continuation of drier and warmer weather than usual for the first half of September.
