Mason and Emily lead the current list of most popular newborn baby names in the Thunder Bay area.

The Ministry of Government and Consumer Services released the list today.

Mason is number one for boys' names, followed in order by Carter/Jacob (tie), Lucas/Oliver (tie), Liam, and Grayson/Hudson/Jack/Michael (tie).

The top choices for girls' names are Emily/Sophia (tie), Charlotte/Emma (tie), and Norah/Olivia/Violet (tie).

Across the province, the ministry says, Olivia is the most popular baby name for the fifth year in a row, but Charlotte and Henry are the fastest-rising in popularity.

Parents looking for something different in a name might consider Tenley, Riaan or Eason, which are all on the list this year for the first time.

The government says pop culture inspired some of the less common name choices, with some parents opting to name their kids Khaleesi after a popular character on the TV show ``Game of Thrones.''
