THUNDER BAY — The owner of a Thunder Bay-area diving school and diving charter business is appealing for the return of a trailer and equipment which he says poses a danger for people not trained to handle it.
Ryan Hamlin of Lakehead Technical Diving has offered a $500 cash reward "with no questions asked" for the recovery of the items.
Hamlin said a grey-coloured V-nose Cargo Mate trailer was taken over the Labour Day weekend from a Rosslyn-area storage yard.
The trailer—customized for safely hauling scuba tanks—contained a large quantity of diving equipment, including:
- a pop-up ice-shelter tent
- 2 sets of twinned (banded together) steel 1130s tanks
- 3 buoyancy control devices
- 2 sets of twinned aluminum 80s tanks
- 2 single steel 180s tanks
- 3 aluminum 80s tanks
- 1 aluminum 40 tank with a blue finish
Hamlin values the trailer and diving equipment at $14,000.
He said there is a serious risk to individuals not trained in the use of high-pressure scuba tanks.
"In the wrong hand the tanks could become lethal. Even if the person who stole the trailer mishandles them the tanks could rupture and destroy property and/or injure or even kill someone," Hamlin said.
He's asking anyone with information to contact him, Thunder Bay Police or Crime Stoppers.
