The start if ice breaking on Lake Superior is just around the corner, and that has the Thunder Bay Port Authority getting prepared for shipping season.

Harbour Master Guy Jarvis said they hope to get an ice breaker in as early as next Friday.

“The port authority has been talking to the U.S. and Canadian Coast Guards about perhaps getting an ice-breaking asset up to the port earlier than usual,” Jarvis said during an interview with CKPR Radio.

“Because of the light conditions on the western side of Lake Superior we’re hopeful an ice-breaking asset will be available as early as Friday, (March 16).”

Jarvis added that the ice is less than half of its usual thickness of about three feet.

The process of breaking the ice typically takes about a week to complete.
