UPDATED: Hundreds of Hydro One customers still off the grid

Environment Canada reported wind gusts of up to 95 km/h in the Thunder Bay area.

THUNDER BAY — Hundreds of Hydro One customers in the Thunder Bay region remained off the grid Tuesday afternoon in the wake of a series of storm-related power outages that began Monday evening.

Environment Canada reported  wind gusts of up to 95 kilometres per hour on the Welcome Islands and 74 kilometres per hour at Thunder Bay Airport.

Hydro One's outage map showed close to 2,600 customers still off-line as of 10:30 a.m. in rural areas outside Thunder Bay and in locations from the southwest of the city to Nipigon.

However, by mid-afternoon the number of affected customers was down to a few hundred.

Power was expected to be restored by early evening im most areas.

Another outage in the Marathon/Hemlo/White River area which affected 1,800 customers was still listed as "partially restored," but according to the outage map all repairs would not be completed until 6:00 p.m.

About 3,500 Synergy North customers in the City of Thunder Bay were also off the grid for extended periods overnight Monday into early Tuesday due to storm-related damage. However, the utility's outage map showed no outstanding issues at mid-morning Tuesday.

In addition to strong wind, Environment Canada said the Colorado Low that swept through the region dropped up to 41 millimetres of rain on the city Monday evening and overnight.

According to the forecast, more showers are possible through Thursday evening, with a chance of snow flurries starting Wednesday as temperatures fall over the next few days.
