Three accused in historic human trafficking case to stand trial

THUNDER BAY — The three individuals facing numerous charges relating to human trafficking dating back more than 20 years are expected to stand trial later this year.

Trial dates in November have been set for 64-year-old Dawn Proulx, 53-year-old Pierre Marier, and 44-year-old Helen Charette, who were charged in the fall of 2021.

Proulx was charged on Oct. 4, 2021 with three counts of procuring an individual for prostitution, one count of living off the avails of prostitution of an individual under 18, and one count of sexual exploitation.

Marier was arrested on Nov. 19, 2022 and charged with procuring an individual for prostitution; exercising control, direction or influence over the movements of a person to aid, abet, or compel them to engage in or carry on prostitution; procuring or soliciting an individual to have sexual intercourse with another individual; and living wholly or in part on the avails of prostitution of an individual under the age of 18.

Marier was also charged with sexual exploitation by way of inciting or inviting a young person to sexual touching and assault with a weapon.

Charette turned herself into the Thunder Bay Police Service on Nov. 22, 2021 and was charged with three counts of procuring as it relates to prostitution under the Criminal Code of Canada, as well as sexual exploitation, and living on the avails of prostitution of an individual under the age of 18.  

According to the Thunder Bay Police Service, the charges relate to incidents that occurred in Thunder Bay between November 1998 and March 2000.

The judge-alone trial is set to open on Nov. 8, 2023 and is scheduled for six days.
