Three assaulted after man flees airport security while in possession of suspected fentanyl

Police seized suspected fentanyl, nearly $39,000 in cash and paraphernalia consistent with drug trafficking.

THUNDER BAY — City police say a 25-year-old southern Ontario man assaulted three people while attempting to flee from airport screening while in possession of suspected fentanyl.

Thunder Bay police said officers were called to the airport just after 6:30 p.m. after receiving reports that a man had assaulted security guards.

Police said the man was selected for airport screening, where security guards became suspicious that he was trying to hide something. After informing him that police would be called, the man attempted to run.

He allegedly assaulted two security guards and a bystander, and also damaged an airport sliding door. One of those who was assaulted was taken to hospital for treatment of injuries that are believed to be minor.

Police seized suspected fentanyl, nearly $39,000 in cash and paraphernalia consistent with drug trafficking.

Juirey Tyrek Walker-Hinds, from Peterborough, is charged with four counts of assault, along with mischief, drug possession for the purpose of trafficking, and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. The charges have yet to be tested in court.

He appeared in court on Wednesday and remains in custody with a future appearance date.
