THUNDER BAY -- Two separate snowmobile collisions in remote areas of the District of Thunder Bay resulted in serious injuries to three people over the weekend.

Superior North Emergency Medical Services paramedics responded to both incidents.

According to a Superior North EMS news release, two individuals were hurt on Saturday when the machine they were riding on struck a tree on a trail about 17 kilometres south of Shabaqua Corners.

One paramedic was taken to the collision scene by another snowmobiler, and stabilized both patients. One of the victims was airlifted to Thunder Bay hospital while the other was taken there by land ambulance.

Later on Saturday, a snowmobiler was injured when the person's machine was hit from behind by another snowmobile on a trail 14 kilometres west of Schreiber. The Schreiber fire department transported paramedics to the scene, where the patient was stabilized. The individual was then taken out of the remote area to a waiting ambulance, and subsequently transferred to Thunder Bay.

Wayne Gates, Chief of Superior North EMS, said that although the three victims all suffered serious injuries, he has "no doubt they are alive today because they were wearing helmets."
