THUNDER BAY – The District of Thunder Bay now has a record 198 active COVID-19 cases.

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit on Friday announced 40 new cases, with an additional 12 considered resolved.

The previous high for active cases was 186, recorded on Jan. 29.

It was also the second-highest single day total announced, with only the Jan. 21 count of 56 topping Friday's number. 

Thirty of the cases are considered close contact cases, while the other exposure category is still pending. One case is tied to the outbreak at the Thunder Bay District Jail and the remaining case has an unknown exposure category. 

The region is now up to 1,280 COVID-19 cases in total since the pandemic began, with 1,055 considered resolved. There have been 27 deaths, but there has not been one announced since Jan. 30. 

Thirty-nine of the cases are considered to reside in Thunder Bay and surrounding areas, with one more in a First Nations community. 

There have now been 695 cases reported in 2021 in the District of Thunder Bay. There were 585 in all of 2020.
