THUNDER BAY — Activities will be guided by COVID-19 guidelines, but the City of Thunder Bay will mark its inaugural Neighbour Day on Saturday, June 20.

Council last month declared the third Saturday in June to be Neighbour Day each year.

In an announcement Tuesday, the city said the kickoff for the annual event is an opportunity to connect and celebrate, while also recognizing Thunder Bay's 50th anniversary.

"Neighbour Day helps to build a strong and caring community," said Mayor Bill Mauro.

He encouraged residents to connect with their neighbours "and celebrate our unique and diverse neighbourhoods."

Ideas for participating are listed in a toolkit posted online at thunderbay.ca/neighbourday.

They include sending a card to say thank you to a neighbour, hosting a driveway dance party or concert that allows people to maintain social distancing, and decorating windows or yards in a common neighbourhood theme.

Under current guidelines, gatherings of up to 10 people are acceptable but physical distancing or masks are still encouraged.

Neighbour Day-themed instructional art videos created by the Community Arts & Heritage Education Project will be available soon on the Neighbour Day Facebook page and website.

The city is encouraging residents to display their creations and share on social media using #thanksneighbour.
