THUNDER BAY — The Thunder Bay District Health Unit is reporting one additional case in hospital among 86 new positive cases of  COVID-19 in its service area.

Seventeen district residents are now receiving treatment for the virus in hospital.

Two people remain in intensive care, the same number as on Monday.

With 81 previously-diagnosed cases resolved over the previous 24 hours, the district's active case count stood at 292 as of Tuesday morning.

Through data quality checks, three cases that were previously reported by TBDHU were removed from its case count.

Among the new cases, four resulted from household contact, seven from other close contact, and two from travel outside Northwestern Ontario.

The remainder either have no known exposure source or are still under investigation.

Sixty-three cases involve residents of the city or immediate surrounding area, while 16 are in First Nations communities and seven are in other district communities.

TBDHU continues to advise that the number of confirmed cases is a significant underestimate of the actual incidence of COVID-19 in the region, due to the fact that testing currently is limited only to the most vulnerable individuals and those in the highest-risk settings.
