The death of an inmate at the Thunder Bay District Jail is under investigation.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services says a male inmate was found unresponsive in his cell yesterday.

Paramedics were called, and the inmate was pronounced dead in hospital.

The spokesperson told tbnewswatch.com in an e-mail that further details of the incident will not be released pending the investigation, but "should the Coroner's death investigation determine that the inmate's death was anything other than natural causes, a mandatory inquest will be held."

Thunder Bay Police are not commenting on the incident, and are advising journalists to contact the coroner's office.

Regional Coroner Dr. Michael Wilson said the Forensic Pathology Service, which is part of the provincial coroner's office, is assisting in the investigation.

A post-mortem is scheduled to be conducted in Toronto on Thursday morning.
