THUNDER BAY — The Thunder Bay District Health Unit says there are 268 new confirmed COVID-19 cases in its coverage area.

Monday's report includes cases that were confirmed over the weekend and brings the region across the 5,000-case threshold, with 5,151 since the pandemic began, including 887 this month alone.

The 161 new cases last Friday were the largest-ever single-day total in the district.

TBDHU also reported three new hospital admissions, bringing to 10 the number of district residents receiving treatment in hospital.

The active case count as of Monday stands at 308, compared with 265 on Friday.

Because current testing for the virus is limited to those at highest risk, health officials continue to emphasize that the true incidence of COVID-19 in the district is likely significantly higher than the statistics indicate.

Among the new cases, 75 are due to household contact or other close contact, 40 have no known exposure source, and three involve travel outside Northwestern Ontario.

A hundred and fifty cases remain under investigation.

More than 200 of the cases involve residents of Thunder Bay or immediate surrounding area.

There are 32 cases on First Nations, and 28 in other district communities.
