THUNDER BAY — A hospital physician in Thunder Bay is one of four Ontario doctors to win the College of Physicians and Surgeons 2020 Council Award.

Dr. Nicole Laferriere is the chief of oncology and medical director at Regional Cancer Care Northwest, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

A statement from the hospital says the award honours outstanding Ontario physicians with a broad range of diverse roles and abilities.

Nominations are made annually by colleagues, patients and local community leaders.

Dr. Laferriere has been a full-time hematologist at the hospital since 2005 and chief of oncology and medical director at the cancer treatment centre since 2014.

She also holds an academic appointment as an assistant professor in internal medicine at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.

"Dr. Laferriere is an outstanding physician and an asset to our hospital and regional cancer centre," said Dr. Zaki Ahmed, chief of staff at TBRHSC.

He added "Cancer patients are some of the most vulnerable patients...it is comforting to know that they are under the care of such a talented, compassionate, and accomplished physician."

Laferriere has also received a number of other awards and scholarships, including the Cancer Care Ontario Human Touch Award.
