A locally-based group has purchased two of the largest privately-held parcels of land on the Bowman Island in Lake Superior.
The Thunder Bay Field Naturalist announced its purchase in a news release issued to media Wednesday morning. The group says it intends to protect the Bowman Island land it has purchased by making it a nature reserve.
Bowman island is located on the south side of St. Ignace Island.
Much of the island is owned by the Crown and is expected to become part of the new National Marine Conservation area.
Officials with the Thunder Bay Field Naturalists say their purchase means that nearly the entire island is protected.
The club owns a total of more than 1,000 hectares of land at 13 reserves across northwestern Ontario.
More information and photos of the club’s nature reserves are available on the organizations’ website.
