Thunder Bay gardeners asked to grow an extra row

Gardens in Thunder Bay can grow an extra row and share the harvest this year.
Healthy-food

THUNDER BAY -- The Thunder Bay and Area Food Strategy, an organization that promotes food security, is encouraging local gardeners to set aside a row of produce for charity this year.

Garden products such as cucumbers, lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, peppers, cabbage, onions, peas and others can be donated after harvesting to agencies such as the Regional Food Distribution Association, the Salvation Army, the Dew Drop Inn and Grace Place.

In a news release, the Food Strategy says an estimated 13 per cent of Thunder Bay-area residents are living below the poverty line. Close to 3,500 people access food banks in the city each month.

By planning ahead and planting an extra garden row dedicated to those in need, it says gardeners can help others in the community enjoy healthy,  home-grown food.

The chart below provides additional information.

Gardeners are asked to pre-rinse produce before dropping it off.
