THUNDER BAY -- The District of Thunder Bay has crossed another dubious COVID-19 milestone, hitting 200 active cases for the first time during the pandemic.

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit on Saturday announced 32 new cases, bringing the active count to a record-high 209, 11 more than Friday's 198, the most until that point.

Twenty-two of the cases are considered close contact, six are considered in the unknown exposure category and four more cases are pending.

Twenty-seven of the cases reside in Thunder Bay and surrounding area, while five live in First Nations communities.

There were 11 district residents in hospital with the virus as of Saturday, including three in the Intensive Care Unit.

The 32 new cases marks the first time the health unit has announced 30 or more cases in back-to-back days.

The city has had 1,312 cases since the pandemic began, with 1,076 of them considered to be resolved. There have been 27 deaths attributed to COVID-19.
