THUNDER BAY — The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre now has 44 admitted patients who have tested positive for COVID-19.

That's one fewer than what was reported on Saturday.

In its daily update on the situation, the hospital also said Monday that 11 of the 44 patients are receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit, compared with 12 on Saturday.

The TBRHSC moved its internal COVID-19 response level to Grey (lockdown) on Friday after declaring a COVID-19 outbreak in the 1A Medical Unit, leaving the 24 beds in that unit unavailable for admissions.

As of Monday, the overall occupancy rate in the hospital is 73 per cent, compared with 78 per cent on Friday.

TBRHSC has 495 "funded beds," including those designated for Alternate Level of Care at the Transitional Care Unit at Hogarth Riverview Manor.

Of that total, 360 beds are currently occupied.

Despite the concerns about the COVID-19 situation, the hospital statement reiterated "TBRHSC continues to be a safe place for anyone needing to visit the Emergency room or any programs they are involved with."

It also said it anticipates receiving additional vaccine this week.

The statement said the hospital is working with the Thunder Bay Public Health Unit to determine the allocation and priorities for vaccinating all health care workers in Phase 1 of the provincial rollout as quickly as possible.

This includes completion of vaccinations for all health care staff in the hospital as well as those in the community such as in primary care, dental offices, and specialist clinics.
