THUNDER BAY — Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre is stepping up its internal COVID-19 pandemic response level.

The hospital made the announcement Tuesday, saying it's due to an increase in COVID-19 admissions at the hospital and across Ontario, as well as the impact of the highly transmissible Omicron variant.

The response level has shifted from Red (Control) to Grey (Lockdown).

TBRHSC said this implements a number of new measures to protect the health and safety of staff, patients and the community.

These include testing all new admissions for COVID-19, ramping down clinical services and limiting access for Essential Care Partners, contractors and vendors.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the hospital had 21 patients admitted who are COVID-19 positive.

Six of these patients are currently in the Intensive Care Unit.

On Monday there were 26 patients admitted with COVID, including six in the ICU.

The current medical/surgical occupancy is at 101 per cent, while the ICU occupancy is at 86 per cent.
