THUNDER BAY — A Thunder Bay landlord has paid a steep price for violating the Ontario Fire Code.

After an inspection last fall, the fire service charged a Rosedale Avenue apartment owner for not testing various fire safety systems, failing to keep records and not repairing fire-separating walls in two six-unit buildings.

The landlord was fined $2,000 for each of nine counts for a total of $18,000, plus a victim fine surcharge and court costs.

Deputy Chief Greg Hankkio said a landlord is responsible for carrying out provisions of the fire code, including doing monthly and annual checks which must be documented.

The fire service is advising tenants in apartment buildings with fire alarm systems that the building owner should be performing these required tests.

Failing to test and inspect fire and life safety systems can result in a fine of up to $50,000 for individuals, and $100,000 for corporations.
