WINNIPEG – A 31-year-old Thunder Bay man faces weapons and mischief charges after Winnipeg police responded to a report of a man armed with a baseball bat acting erratically in the Empress Street area of the Manitoba capital.

Winnipeg police, in a release issued on Thursday, said the man then entered a business in the 1300 block of Ellice Avenue, and still armed with the bat, doused himself in lighter fluid.

After 25 minutes of unsuccessfully trying to convince the man to put down the weapon, members of the tactical support team used a less-than-lethal projectile to take the man into custody.

During the encounter he consumed a substance he told police was methamphetamine and asked police to shoot him. He also produced a weapon and motioned as if he was going to light himself on fire.

The suspect, who was not named, was arrested and taken into custody, charged with possession of a weapon and mischief under $5,000/obstruct in enjoyment.
