GRAND PORTAGE, Minn. – A 60-year-old Thunder Bay man was arrested south of the border after picking up a package that contained more than 3,000 non-prescribed, narcotic pills.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office, along with the United States Border Patrol, arrested the man last Friday when he picked up a package in Grand Portage, Minn, the sheriff’s office said in a news release issued Wednesday morning.

The investigation included the Cook County Drug Task Force, U.S. Border Patrol, Minnesota State Patrol and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conservation officers, in cooperation with Homeland Security.

“I commend the efforts of our (Cook County Sheriff’s Office) investigator and the Cook County Drug Task Force,” said Sheriff Pat Eliasen in a statement. “This is a significant interception; we are pleased to take these pills off the streets.”

The suspect has been charged with first degree drug possession and was released after posting $100,000 bail.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office said it is also working with law enforcement agencies in Canada on this case.
