Thunder Bay man charged with impaired driving causing death

New charges are laid in connection with a November 2023 collision that resulted in the death of a 79-year-old man.

THUNDER BAY — The death of a motorist involved in a head-collision in Thunder Bay last year has now resulted in new charges against the other driver.

The impact of the Nov. 30 collision, which occurred near Highgate Road, was so severe both vehicles ended up in the ditch on opposite sides of the road — and the engine block from one came to rest in the yard of a nearby residence.

Three people were injured, including 79-year-old Russell Wanzuk, the operator of a pickup truck.

He died in hospital two months later.

The Thunder Bay Police Service initially charged Dallas Hiebert, 29, with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm and impaired driving causing bodily harm.

Hiebert appeared in court Tuesday charged additionally with impaired driving causing death and dangerous driving causing death.

The charges have not been proven in court.
