TORONTO – Sunrise Records may indeed land in Thunder Bay, but the Northwestern Ontario city was not on the Toronto-based chain's initial list of store openings in the wake of HMV’s collapse.

The company earlier this week announced a list of 29 former HMV locations it will be taking over from the bankrupt retailer from coast to coast, including nine in Ontario.

However, Thunder Bay is not on that list.

Sunrise Records does plan to release a second batch of locations starting on March 20, promising to increase its presence to 70 stores nationwide.

HMV at present is closing out its Intercity Shopping Centre store and mall officials last month told Dougall Media they were in negotiations with a new tenant for the spot, but declined to say who it was.

The nearest Sunrise Records location announced this week was Sault Ste. Marie to the east and a pair of storefronts in Winnipeg to the west.

The company plans to carry 50 per cent more CDs than HMV did, an expanded apparel section and at least 2,000 vinyl titles in stock at each Sunrise Records store.
