THUNDER BAY — Thunder Bay Police and the coroner's office are investigating the sudden death Tuesday of a 39-year-old man.

It's not a criminal investigation at this time, but police continue to examine the circumstances and are awaiting the results of the post-mortem examination.

Officers were called to the 300-block of Heron Street just before 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.

They located the man's body and confirmed he was deceased.

A police spokesperson says TBPS has responded to a relatively high volume of sudden deaths over the past few days.

Media Relations Coordinator Scott Paradis said Wednesday that members of the Major Crimes Unit are continuing to work with the coroner's office to advance these investigations.

"Due to local capacity issues, more post-mortem exams are taking place in Toronto instead of Thunder Bay," Paradis noted.

He said this may sometimes require police to maintain an extended presence at a death scene.

Paradis said it's understandable that residents are curious when this happens, but police encourage social media users – out of respect for grieving families – to avoid speculating and advancing possibly hurtful rumours about the deceased.

"Amplifying false information online, whether intentional or accidental, can also be harmful to an ongoing investigation," he said.
