THUNDER BAY -- The Thunder Bay Public Library is hoping city council can find around $5.5 million in next year's budget, for a renovation of Waverley Library.
The Library board hired consultants in 2015 to look at what would be needed to renew Waverley Library.
The building was constructed in 1951, and was renovated once, in the 70s.
Architects say they've identified three priorities for the renovation, which include maximizing available space, improving facilities for children and youth, and redeveloping the front area for better accessibility and visibility.
Waverley Library renovations are currently included in budget 2020, but architectural consultants say the building already needs repairs in the six-figure range.
“Our review of the building condition audits marked high priority items just approximating $600,000 and that’s not taking into account mid or low level, which will eventually become more urgent,” said LGA Architectural Design Dan Bartman
No motion was tabled on the issue, but councillor Joe Virdiramo says he plans to move to include the cost in the 2018 budget when council resumes sitting in July.
