NIPIGON, ON — A Thunder Bay woman died on the weekend after being swept away by the current on the Wolf River in Dorion Township.

Nipigon OPP identified the victim as 25-year-old Pooja Vyas.

Police said they were notified about 6 p.m. on Friday about an incident that had occurred at Wolf River Falls.

Three people had attempted to cross the river at the top of the falls to retrieve an item when two of them got caught up in the strong current and were swept down the river.

Lifesaving measures were attempted on Vyas at the scene but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other individual, the victim's husband,  was taken to Thunder Bay hospital with life-threatening injuries.

There was no word Monday morning on his status.

An OPP spokesperson said the tragic incident is a reminder to people to be cautious around the fast-moving water  this year.
