THUNDER BAY — Students participating in co-curricular sports activities will need to provide proof of a COVID-19 vaccination starting next week.

It's a requirement of the vaccine protocol developed in consultations among the Superior Secondary Schools Athletic Association, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, Lakehead Public Schools, the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board, Conseil scolaire de district catholique des Aurores boréales and Dennis Franklin Cromarty High School.

The protocol includes mandatory vaccination for all eligible participants in Grades 7 to 12 unless they have a board-approved medical exemption.

Students must show proof of their first dose by Mon. Dec. 6, 2021, and proof of their second dose by Mon. Jan. 31, 2022.

Vaccinations are necessary to compete against other schools or travel off school property for all co-curricular sports activities sanctioned by the SSSAA, North Western Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association and the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations.

Full details of the vaccine protocol are available on the SSSAA website.
