OTTAWA -- Governor General Julie Payette has named Olympic medallist Curt Harnett a member of the Order of Canada.

The Thunder Bay native won fame at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games where he captured a silver medal.

In total, Harnett represented Canada at four Olympics, and captured three medals. He also won numerous other medals in international competition.

"I. Am. A. Canadian. Not special nor unique, just a guy that gave my best to do my best while representing the country that I adore. I wore the maple leaf with great pride. The same pride I feel at this moment. Congrats to my fellow appointees," Harnett tweeted upon learning of the honour.

The governor-general's office said Harnett is being honoured "for achieving excellence in the sport of cycling and for his leadership as an advocate for Canadian athletes."

Harnett served as Chef de Mission for Team Canada at the 2015 Pan American Games and the 2016 Olympic games.

He currently lives in Toronto where he is a sports marketing consultant and communications specialist.
