THUNDER BAY – As Thunder Bay road work crews are nearing completion of the new roundabout on the intersection of Edward and Redwood, the city is planning to host an information session in order to help Thunder Bay drivers learn how to use the roundabout safely.
Many Thunder Bay drivers already have some experience driving through a roundabout as there is a smaller roundabout near the south entrance of Marina Park, however, the two-lane roundabout is a little more complicated to manoeuvre according to Matthew Miedema, project engineer with the city of Thunder Bay.
“That’s a single lane roundabout, so that’s a very basic roundabout, that’s one lane, which does get you in three directions, this one has four directions, so that’s a little more complex,” said Miedema.
The information session, which was initially dubbed a Roundabout Rodeo, a name that was changed after complaints about its insensitivity toward Indigenous people, will be held at the intersection of Edward and Churchill on Aug. 21 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. City workers plan to show residents short videos on how to use the roundabout as well as giving drivers and pedestrians a chance to use the roundabout in a safe and controlled environment.
Construction on the Edward Street roundabout began in July and is scheduled to be completed in mid to late September.
