Thunder Bay Transit workers voting on a new contract

Approval of the deal will eliminate the possibility of a strike by bus drivers and maintenance staff.

THUNDER BAY — Over 150 employees of Thunder Bay Transit are deciding today whether to accept a proposed new collective agreement and avert a possible strike.

Bus drivers and maintenance staff represented by Amalgamated Transit Union Local 966 are holding a ratification vote.

The tentative agreement was reached last week during two days of talks with a provincial conciliator.

The president of the local, Fred Caputo, said the union's bargaining team is recommending acceptance.

Terms of the deal have not been made public yet, but results of the vote are expected to be announced late this evening.

The previous collective agreement expired in June 2023.

Negotiators for the ATU were armed with an overwhelming strike mandate, as 99 per cent of members who voted had given their approval to a walkout in the event that talks failed to produce a deal.
