THUNDER BAY -- The active COVID-19 case count continues to climb in the District of Thunder Bay.
The Thunder Bay District Health Unit on Saturday announced 16 new cases, leaving the region with a total of 81 active case, six more than on Friday andthe most since April 13, when there were 87.
The case count has grown steadily since May 26, when there were just 17 in the district.
The health unit also announced 18 new cases tied to variants of concern and have added 67 to the count since Monday, for a total of 157.
There have now been 3,289 cases confirmed in Thunder Bay District since the pandemic began, including 2,704 in 2021. Of those, 3,145 are considered to be resolved. There have been 63 deaths.
Since May 28, there have been 99 cases announced by the health unit,with 57 considered to reside in First Nations communities, 23 in district communities and 19 in Thunder Bay and surrounding area. Of Saturday's cases, six are in Thunder Bay,eight are in First Nations and two are in district communities.
