THUNDER BAY -- Vaccination rates are back on track in the District of Thunder Bay, after a two-week dip to allow vaccines to be diverted to southern Ontario hot spots.
The Thunder Bay District Health Unit on Tuesday announced it gave out a total of 9,001 vaccines for the week ending on May 15, 7,156 of them as first doses.
As of Saturday, 74,143 residents have received at least one dose, representing 54 per cent of the 16-and-older population in the district and 45.6 per cent of the overall population.
Last week's total represented a total of 3,246 more vaccinations than the prior week, a 56.4 per cent increase.
A total of 10,531 people living in the district have now received a second dose, which represents 7.67 per cent of the over-16 population.
Ontario on Tuesday opened vaccination appointments to anyone 18 and older.
Canada is expected to receive 4.5 million vaccine doses this week. The country has vaccinated 45 per cent of its overall population with one dose and 3.8 per cent of its population have had both doses, half the Thunder Bay rate.
At last week's pace, Thunder Bay would reach 75 per cent vaccinated in three weeks' time.
