THUNDER BAY — Even though Tuesday was actually colder, the only weather record broken at Thunder Bay Airport during the recent cold snap was set Wednesday morning.
Environment Canada says the temperature of -35 C at the airport broke a 58-year-old record of -33.9 C for Feb. 10.
Meteorologist Peter Kimbell notes that an even lower temperature was reached on this date more than a century ago in the former City of Port Arthur, where the federal government had weather monitoring equipment.
Records show that in 1914, the temperature dropped to -38 C.
Tuesday's airport reading of minus 36.6 was more than two degrees higher than the record of 38.9 established in 1951.
Temperatures will remain well below normal through the beginning of next week at least.
