THUNDER BAY — If you consider June to mark the beginning of summer, then the season got off to a great start in the Thunder Bay region.

Environment Canada says that as of Monday, the average daily high temperature in the city was more than two degrees above normal for June.

At Thunder Bay Airport, the average maximum through the month was 22.8 C, compared with the long-term average of only 20.6 C.

Environment Canada's Gerald Cheng says that, in meteorological terms, that is a significant difference.

July will begin with an even more impressive warming trend.

Starting on Canada Day, Thunder Bay is expected to see five consecutive days of 30-degree weather.

The normal high this time of year is about 23 C.

Cheng said "If you live beside the lake, good for you, because you live right beside nature's air conditioning. But if you live farther inland, it's going to be a scorcher until next week."

The current long-range forecast still calls for a high of 29 C even next Monday.

Cheng said people who don't like hot weather will have to be "really patient," perhaps until around July 8.
