Thunder Bay's traffic signal boxes become works of art

What used to be plain metal boxes are now wrapped in the work of six local artists.

THUNDER BAY — A dozen traffic signal control boxes around the City of Thunder Bay have been transformed into works of art.

The city last year commissioned local artists to beautify the utilitarian metal boxes with unique and colourful designs.

By the end of this week, the project is expected to be completed.

Motorists and pedestrians will notice the vinyl-wrapped signal boxes at intersections in high-traffic locations, including some along the city's designated image routes.

They feature the work of artists Ryan Newman, Jordan Danielsson, Natalie Hotson, SosaDemonas (Rebecca Knight), Vicki Nerion and boy Roland.

"The graphic vinyl wraps contribute to the vitality and attractiveness of the streetscape by beautifying city infrastructure, adding colour and a unique story to each intersection," said cultural development and events supervisor Louisa Costanzo when the project was announced last year.

The twelve locations will be included in a new tour to be added to the Thunder Bay Tours app. It will be available for download in the Apple iTunes App Store and Google Play Store.

The city will make an announcement soon with more details about the artists and the locations of their work.

Funding for the project was provided by the Emerging Projects fund of the city's Clean, Green and Beautiful Committee.

The public art committee of the city's recreation and culture division, and the engineering division, also collaborated.
