THUNDER BAY -- Two of Northwestern Ontario’s top swimming athletes have received the prestigious Swim Ontario-Dan Taylor Student Athlete Scholarship.

These scholarships are awarded to the top qualifying male and female high school students from each of the six Swim Ontario regions who combine both swimming excellence and academic achievement.

The Dan Taylor Team Student Athlete Scholarship commemorates Dan Taylor in recognition of his 40 year commitment to the sport of swimming in Ontario. Mr. Taylor poured his heart and soul into supporting the swimming community as a volunteer coach, official, club administrator, Regional Chair and Swim Ontario Board member. He strongly believed in regional development.

Grade 11 student Isabel Harri, and Grade 10 student, Sam Chisholm, from the ThunderBolts Swim Club are the recipients of this year’s award.  Both athletes attend Westgate CVI in Thunder Bay.

“I was thrilled to win the Dan Taylor Scholarship for Northwestern Ontario Region.  This year has been different with Covid.  I have worked really hard in school and am excited to be back in the pool,” said an excited Harri.  “The upcoming racing season will be different so goal setting and training are going to be more important than ever.  I feel winning this scholarship is a great start to this different looking year,” added Harri.

“I was so excited and honoured in being the recipient of the Dan Taylor swim scholarship.  This achievement helps me realize that all the hard work and training pays off,” said a very satisfied Sam Chisholm.  “Recognition like this helps to strengthen my commitment during these crazy Covid times.  Training will be unpredictable and possibility limited.  This award will help motivate me to continue pushing myself to further future goals in school and in the pool,” added Chisholm.

Recipients of this scholarship reflect Dan Taylor’s strong belief that the sport of swimming builds good habits, confidence and discipline, makes youth into community leaders and teaches them how to strive for a goal, handle mistakes, and cherish growth opportunities both in the pool and in life.
