Thunderwolves drop third straight

Guelph built an early 4-0 lead and cruised to a 7-2 win to close out the pre-season on Saturday night.

THUNDER BAY – The Lakehead Thunderwolves dropped their third straight non-conference game on Saturday night, falling 7-2 at home to the visiting Guelph Gryphons.

Cameron Searles had two goals and added a helper and Jacob Winterton picked up four assists to lead Guelph offensively.

Ted McGeen, Liam Ham, Nolan DeGurse, Nathan Allensen and Zachary Poirier had the other Gryphons goals.

Colin Van Den Hurk had a goal and an assist for Lakehead, Joe Mack picking up the other tally.

Guelph built a 4-0 lead by th4 2:24 mark of the first, and scored five times on 25 shots against goaltender Max Wright, who took the loss before being pulled late in the second.

Brock Aiken took over in nets for LU and allowed two goals on 14 shots.

Brendan Cregan and Nate McDonald split duties between the pipes for Guelph, stopping 37 of 39 shots directed their way.

The Wolves open the OUA regular season next weekend on the road in Windsor. Their home opener is Oct. 21 against York.
