TikTok to be barred from city electronic devices

City's official TikTok will also be inactive pending results of federal privacy commissioner probe, after feds and the province also banned the app from government-issued devices.

THUNDER BAY -- City employees will no longer be able to scroll TikTok on their work-issued devices.

City of Thunder Bay officials on Friday announced they were following the lead of the federal and Ontario governments, prohibiting the app from corporate electronic devices.

"Out of an abundance of caution and in consultation with the City's Corporate Information Technology division and social media team, the TikTok app will be removed from all City devices," city corporate information technology director Jack Avella said in a statement.

"In addition, the City's official TikTok account will be inactive pending results of the Federal Office of the Privacy Commissioner probe."

Senior levels of government have taken similar steps in the last few weeks, citing security concerns about protection of government data and networks.

Avella said the city has not identified any specific security risks at this time.
