THUNDER BAY – The crowdfunding campaign to Save the Finlandia has to collect just $2,300 more dollars, but only has seven days left to do it.
For more than 100 years the Finnish Labour Temple has served as a cultural hub in the city. But earlier in March Kelly Saxberg, treasurer of the Finlandia Association, revealed that the organization was in dire straits.
“We’re facing substantial debt and challenges that came as a result of renovations that were necessary. The new roof, heating system and wheelchair accessibility but we’re struggling,” she told tbnewswatch.com.
Shortly after that was revealed an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign, kicked off by Crystal DiGiuseppe, was launched in an effort to try and raise $15,000 to help put the historic building back on the right financial track.
As of Tuesday afternoon the campaign had raised $12,720.
But as a fixed campaign the effort is either all or nothing. If Save the Finlandia can’t hit its $15,000 target in seven days, it will collect none of the money pledged to it.
“In reality, $15,000 seems like a reasonable and achievable goal for our community,” reads the campaigns summary. “If our goal is achieved we would like to see the funds go into something concrete. Upon further discussion with the Finlandia Association the “Save the Finlandia” campaign, and the funds it receives, will raise awareness and support within our community.
“If the campaign is successful, the funds will be used to refurbish the auditorium to bring low cost productions to the hall and revitalize the hall's role within the community as a cultural hub for everyone.”
